Details about USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program

The United States Institute of Peace Scholarship is an opportunity that provides non-residential fellowships to PhD candidates who are enrolled in U.S. universities and writing doctoral dissertations on subjects or topics widely related to peace building, conflict management, and related security studies.

Since 1998, 371 young scholars have received support from the Peace Scholar Fellowship Program for their dissertations; many of these scholars have gone on to make distinguished careers in research, policy making, and higher education.

On September 1st, 2022, applications for the 2023-24 Peace Scholar Fellowship competition started

The Minerva Research Initiative partners with USIP’s fellowship program to support new fellowships with focus on peace and security studies. 
Currently, up to 18 scholarships are given out annually, and these grants help with both the research and writing phases of dissertation preparation.

Applications from those who belong to groups that are typically underrepresented in diplomacy and international policymaking, security studies, peace and conflict studies, and other relevant academic subjects are greatly and actively encouraged for this program.

PhD students who have conducted higher caliber, research on policy are encouraged to apply for the USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program for the academic years 2023–2024. 
Applications that are pertinent to the Minerva Research Initiative’s research priorities and/or USIP Issue Areas are strongly preferred.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is federal organisation in the United States whose mission is to advance conflict prevention and resolution around the world. 
People who want to engage in negotiation, diplomacy, or other peace-building activities can receive analysis, research, and training from USIP.

Eligibility Criteria for 2023-24 USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship

  • PhD candidates enrolled in American universities who have passed all of their needed coursework and any required comprehensive exams are eligible to apply.
  • The applications are open to non-citizens as well, however they must be PhD candidates who are currently enrolled in US university.
  • There is no limit on applicants’ ages.

Financial Benefits

As was already mentioned, there are now 18 funds available for non-residential, 10-month fellowship for peace scholars. Stipends of up to $20,000 will be given to the chosen/successful candidates for the entire academic year. Three straight payments will be made for the sum. These awards may not be postponed.
