Spy Kids: Armageddon First Trailer Has Been Released:
Exciting news for fans of the classic Spy Kids franchise – the first trailer for the reboot, Spy Kids: Armageddon, has just been released. Set to premiere on Netflix on September 22nd, 2023, the trailer promises all the gadget-filled fun that made the original movies so beloved.
Directed once again by Robert Rodriguez, who helmed the first four Spy Kids films, Spy Kids: Armageddon sees the director returning to the zany spy world he created back in 2001. The trailer shows that while this is a reboot, Rodriguez is hoping to capture the same sense of family-friendly action and adventure that defined the original quadrilogy.

The trailer introduces us to the new family at the heart of the franchise – the Tango-Torrezes. Led by spy parents Nora and Terrence (played by Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi), the Tango-Torrezes now include two new spy kids, Patty and Tony (Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson). The trailer shows the family making use of all sorts of cool spy technology as they take on a new mission.
Spy gadgets and vehicles are on full display, promising all of the playful spy action that fans love. We see the new Spy Kids utilize jetpacks, mini-helicopters, and plenty of other futuristic technology as they take on their globe-trotting missions. The trailer has a bright, vibrant look to it as well, clearly aimed at capturing that family-friendly aesthetic.

The Spy Kids: Armageddon cast has a mix of Spy Kids veterans and newcomers. Gina Rodriguez, of Jane the Virgin fame, and Zachary Levi, who plays the title role in Shazam!, lead the cast as the spy parents. Young actors Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson take on the mantle of the Spy Kids. Veteran Spy Kids actor D.J. Cotrona returns, this time playing the film’s villain.

So is Spy Kids: Armageddon a direct sequel to the original movies? The answer is yes and no. While Rodriguez has stressed this is a reboot, not a continuation of the old films, he has promised the movie will be filled with references and Easter eggs that long-time fans will appreciate. The director has said that while the focus is on introducing a new generation to Spy Kids, Armageddon will have plenty of call-backs to the franchises’ history.
That means cameos from original cast members may be in store when the film premieres on Netflix. Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara, who played Carmen and Juni Cortez in the first two films, have expressed interest in returning. Antonio Banderas, who memorably played family friend Gregorio Cortez, has also said he’d be up for another go-round as the wacky inventor.

Spy Kids: Armageddon may be hitting the reset button in many ways, but Rodriguez clearly wants to maintain connections to the franchise’s past as well. This balancing act of old and new is on full display in the first trailer, which includes both fresh characters and storylines along with familiar Spy Kids elements like the kids’ colorful spy outfits.
The core premise also remains – kids from a family of spies take on secret missions and save the world. That family-focused adventurous spirit defined the original movies, and the trailer for Armageddon shows Rodriguez aiming to recapture that special blend.

While story details are still under wraps, the trailer teases an apocalyptic threat the new Spy Kids team must take down. This could lead to the kind of over-the-top, gadget-fueled spectacle longtime fans are hoping for. With Rodriguez back in the director’s chair, bringing his unique sensibilities to the franchise he helped create, hopes are high Spy Kids: Armageddon will usher in an exciting new era for the Spy Kids when it premieres on September 22nd.
