Gabriel shared a brief statement about the origins of “Panopticom” in a press release: The first song is based on the Panopticom, an idea I’ve been working on to kickstart the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe. We’re starting to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, allowing the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on.

Peter Gabriel tweeted about it with caption: Today, on the first full moon of 2023, Peter releases the first new song from his forthcoming album i/o. Written and produced by Peter, Panopticom was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London.

“Panopticom” is Gabriel’s first full track from the long-teased album I/O, which has reportedly been in the works for 20 years.
