Max Barbakow’s new comedy “Palm Springs” will star Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston swapping bodies.

According to Deadline, which broke the news of the project, Amazon won the film after a bidding war between several studios and streamers. Barbakow will write and direct the film, which will be produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. CAA facilitated the sale to Amazon.

Aside from its star-studded cast and financiers, little is known about the film, including its title or plot.

However, the recent surprise successes of “Ticket to Paradise” starring Roberts and George Clooney, as well as “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, have demonstrated that there is a genuine demand for star-driven comedies at a time when the genre has otherwise struggled commercially.

“Ticket to Paradise” and “The Lost City” both grossed more than $150 million worldwide at the box office.

The documentary “Judy Blume Forever” will be available on Amazon, as will “Somebody I Used to Know,” a romantic comedy directed by Dave Franco and starring Alison Brie and Jay Ellis. The former will be released on April 21, while the latter will be available on the streaming service on February 10, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Barbakow is best known for directing “Palm Springs” in his feature film debut.

The high-concept comedy, which stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as wedding guests trapped in a time loop, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by Neon and Hulu for a then-record $17.5 million. “Palm Springs” was supposed to play in theatres, but because it was released during the pandemic, it was mostly shown online and in select drive-ins.

In his review of “Palm Springs,” Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge called the story “ironic, irreverent, and at times insane,” and praised the film for doing “something new with a genre audiences have seen a million times before.”
