How to jump start a car
To jump start a car, you will need to have another car with a working battery and some jumper cables. Here are the steps to follow:
- Park the working car close to the car with the dead battery, making sure that the two cars do not touch.
- Turn off both cars.
- Locate the dead car’s battery and the working car’s battery. The battery is usually located under the hood, but it may also be located in the trunk or under the car.
- Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the working car’s battery.
- Connect the other end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead car’s battery.
- Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the working car’s battery.
- Connect the other end of the black jumper cable to a solid metal part of the dead car, such as a bolt on the engine block or frame. Make sure the metal part is not painted and is not near the battery or fuel lines.
- Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Try starting the dead car. If it starts, let it run for a few minutes to charge the battery. If it doesn’t start, wait a few minutes and try again.
- Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them. First, remove the black cable from the metal part of the dead car, then remove the other end from the negative (-) terminal of the working car’s battery. Next, remove the red cable from the positive (+) terminal of the dead car’s battery, then remove the other end from the positive (+) terminal of the working car’s battery.
It is important to follow these steps carefully to avoid damaging either car or causing injury to yourself. If you are unsure about how to jump start a car or if you do not feel comfortable doing it, it is best to call a professional for assistance.
