‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is on the verge of reaching $1.5 billion in worldwide sales
After earning $1.38 billion in ticket sales, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is reportedly on the verge of breaking even. According to Variety, Cameron stated that the film needs to earn $2 billion in order to meet his goal—but first, let’s rewind a bit first. The director’s lengthy return to Pandora debuted on December 16, and it quickly became a box office hit.

Despite frigid temperatures and holiday gatherings that threatened to keep viewers at home, the film saw a massive audience turnout in just three weeks. Avatar fandom apparently runs deep! Ticket sales could surpass the $2 billion mark if fans continue to flock to theatres to see Jake Sully and the Na’vi. That figure may appear astronomical, but it is entirely reasonable.

The first Avatar film grossed $3 billion in sales in 2009, making it the highest-grossing film of all time. If Cameron gets his wish, The Way of Water may not be far behind. Cameron celebrated the film’s success in a recent Instagram post. “Hello, Jim Cameron here,” he said in a video message to his followers. “I wanted to thank all of our fans for coming out to see Avatar: The Way of Water in theatres, where it was always meant to be seen and experienced. This film has been a deeply personal journey for me, so it’s incredibly satisfying that so many of you have already seen it in theatres. I see you, as the Na’vi say, ‘Oel Ngati Kameie.’ Avatar: The Way of Water will remain in theatres for at least a few more weeks before moving to a streaming service. If you want to see it on the big screen, prepare for a three-hour journey. And don’t be concerned. After the final shot, you can dash to the restroom.
